Who can become a SMART Gardener?

A. The SMART Gardener Program recruits home gardeners who have a passion for gardening and who enjoy sharing their knowledge with others.
How much time do I volunteer if I become a SMART Gardener?
A. Once they have completed their initial training volunteers are asked to provide 40 hours of volunteer service to the Smart Gardener program over a twelve month period.

How do I become a SMART Gardener?

A. SMART Gardener programs are offered through the Australian Centre for Lifestyle Horticulture at a number of locations. To become a SMART Gardener contact your local SMART Gardener Coordinator to find out when they are offering the next training program.

What sort of training will I be given?

Approximately 40 hours of class time over several weeks with presentations by horticultural specialists and local gardening professionals. A comprehensive training manual will be included to support the training.

What will I learn?

You will learn about different soil types and their cultivation, plant physiology and nutrition, weeds, pests and diseases, care of lawns, pruning, plant propagation, composting and fruit and vegetable production.

What sort of activities does a SMART Gardener undertake?

• Researching and answering questions from home gardeners
• Sharing advice and tips about local gardening at local events
• Assisting with activities to promote home gardening for young people and community groups
• Attending community events with displays to promote SMART gardening
• Linking members of the public to lifestyle horticulture associations for expert advice.

Where will I volunteer?

SMART Gardeners normally work within their own local area at community events and activities. Local groups organise activities and events in which SMART Gardeners participate.

What kind of benefits does a SMART Gardener receive?

Following the initial training SMART Gardeners have access to seminars and workshops. These programs offer SMART Gardeners opportunities to further develop their knowledge and skills and contribute to their continued recognition within the program.

SMART Gardeners are encouraged to complete 10 hours of training each year to continue in the program. This may include workshops and guest speakers organised through the program; advanced training in a speciality area or participation in other continuing education activities related to home gardening occurring in their local community.
