Smart Gardening for the Future

Smart Gardening for the Future booklet a book about Queensland Smart GardensGardens of the future will be less reliant on potable water. Many garden owners have already modified or created gardens with this in mind and our booklet, Smart Gardening for the Future will share some of their stories.

This 32 page full colour publication is available for collection at the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries (DPI&F) Redlands Research Centre, 26-40 Delancey Street, Cleveland. The booklet will also be available at various locations across Queensland in the very near future.

For people who received an early copy of Smart Gardening for the Future, there has now been a change to the wording of the last paragraph in the Greywater article on page 28. Please find the amended paragraph below:

IMPORTANT - There are some things which should never be used in greywater irrigation. Do not allow the following substances into your greywater system:

  • bleach and caustic cleaners
  • detergents that advertise whitening, softening and enzymatic powders
  • detergents that contain borax, chlorine, bleach, sodium perborate petroleum distillate and/or alkylbenzene sodium trypochlorite (Wilson 1995)
  • garden chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides
  • automotive products such as oils, grease, brake fluid etc
  • paints and thinners
  • kitchen products such as oils and food particles
  • faecal matter from nappies.
