When an opportunity arose to show Queenslanders how to create beautiful gardens using less water, the Australian Centre for Lifestyle Horticulture (ACLH) jumped at the chance. We knew it could be done and with the help of funding through the Department of Natural Resources and Water and the expertise of the lifestyle horticulture industry we created the Smart Gardening - Start Gardening campaign.
Over the next few months we will introduce you to the SMART mnemonic to help you understand the principles of a water efficient garden. Throughout the pages of Smart Gardening for the Future, we will provide examples of SMART gardens that have been created to survive and look beautiful using these principles. Look for this free booklet now available through your local garden centre.
We held a successful Smart Gardening Open Day in the Redlands during Water Week in October which featured a live broadcast with gardening expert Colin Campbell and lots of expert advice from industry about plants, irrigation and waterwise products. We are also putting together a program called the Smart Gardener that will continue to
provide information about SMART gardening practices through the wisdom of keen volunteer gardeners.
Don’t neglect your garden. It's the place where our children learn about the beauty of nature, where we can relax and entertain friends and family and it can also provide the food that sustains us. Go on - Start Gardening.
